Seven Traits of Wayanad

Wayanad district was formed on November 1, 1980 as the twelfth district in Kerala. Wayanad is the only district in Kerala that shares borders with the states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.There are differing opinions among historians as to the origin of the name. It is said that the name 'Wayanad' is derived from Vayalnad, Vazhinad and Vananad. Some people say that the name 'Vayalnad' or 'Vananad' means a place full of fields and forests.

Kuruva Island


Kuruva island is the biggest river island in Kerala state. It is situated in the Kabani River of north east part of the Wayanad district beside the Karnataka state. This is an group of island which spread over 950 acres in the basin of the river Kabini. This protected area is a home to a wide variety of birds, medicinal plants and plants , so that entry to the public is limited as 600 persons per day.

Banasura Sagar Dam The biggest earth dam in India


One of the most spellbinding places to visit in Wayanad, Banasura Sagar Dam is a picturesque tourist hotspot. This place is extensive natural beauty with beautiful flora and fauna and majestic hills. It is also famous for adventure enthusiasts who like activities like boating, trekking etc.

Karapuzha Dam Second Largest Earth Dam in Kerala


Karapuzha Dam located in the Wayanad district of Kerala, is one of the biggest earth dams in India. Karapuzha Dam is located in the greenish and natural regions of Wayanad.

Pookode Lake


The beautiful freshwater lake is situates 770 meter above from sea level. Pookode Lake is 4 kilometer away from Vyna Hillock Resort.This lake Nestled between evergreen forest and Western Ghats, the lake is spread over 13 acre and is 40 meter deep. This is one of the most preferred tourist destinations in Wayanad.This Forest surrounded lake is ideal place for Photographers and nature lovers. The perennial freshwater lake has the shape of an Indian map. You can see here blue lotus and numerous fresh water fishes.

Karalad Lake


This is the third largest fresh water lake in Kerala and second largest lake in Wayanad after Pookode Lake. The lake is 3 km away from Banasura Sagar Dam. Surface area of this lake is 7 acres with altitude of 700 meter above from sea level.

Hridaya Saras ( Heart Shape Lake )


This Natural Heart Shaped Lake is Situated on 1362 meter above from Sea level. It is said to be one among the ninth natural love shaped lake in the world. It takes about 2.5 kilometer trekking to reach here.

Edakkal Caves


Edakkal Caves that are located on the Ambukuthi Hills. Edakkal literally translates to ‘a stone in between’ and It is a natural gift located at an altitude of 1200 m above sea level. The Edakkal Caves are famous for their stone carving of figures, human, animals, symbols and letters. These paintings are believed to date back to the 6000 BC. The etchings and pre historic line drawings are a testament to the culture and lives of those who lived in the caves years ago.

Thovarimala


The petroglyphs (rock engravings) on the walls of a slanted rock on the Thovarimala hills are believed to date back to the Neolithic period.This Pre-historic stone age petroglyphs dating from around 1000 BC and after had been discovered here at a height of 500m on Thovarimala. The rare historic treasure at Thovarimala throwing light into human habitation in the Wayanad area since ancient time.

Thirunelli Temple


Thirunelli Temple is an ancient temple on the side of Brahmagiri hill in Wayanad. The temple is in a valley surrounded by mountains and beautiful forests. No proper records of the exact dates of establishment of temple exist. Documentary evidence suggests that Thirunelli was an important town and pilgrimage center in southern India by the Tamil Chera king Bhaskara Ravi Varma I (AD 962-1019).

Bathery Jain Temple


A standout amongst the most imperative among the Jain temples in Kerala. This Temple is accepted to have been built in the thirteenth century. Its plan is emphatically affected by the design style of the then ruling Vijayanagar Dynasty.Another interesting element is the history of the sanctuary,which was initially examined as a place of worship and later as a focal point of business transaction, then it become Tipu Sulthan’s armed forces battery.There is a square shape well in front of the jain temple and there is tunnel through this well extends to Mysore.

There are five ghat roads to enter and exit from Wayanad.

Thamaraseery Churam


Thamarassery Pass is one of the most important roads connecting Kozhikode with Wayanad. It is part of National Highway 212 and has a beautiful view of the forest on both sides. Starting from the “ Adivaram” of Thamarassery and ending at Wayanad Lakkidi, this road has nine hairpin bends.

Kuttyadi Ghat Road


Kuttyadi Pass is another road that can be reached from Kozhikkodu to Wayanad . This trail from Kuttiyadi to Thottilpalam is a scenic spot. This path is also known as Pakranthalam Pass.

Nadukani Ghat Road


Nadukani is another ghat road, which is on the way to Malappuram from Wayanad through Vaduvanchal. The main attraction of the place is the 20 km road through the forest.

Paalchuram


Palchuram is one of the roads that connects Kannur with Wayanad. This road from Kottiyoor to Wayanad is also a popular destination for many travelers. This is the easiest way to reach Mananthavady from Iritti. This ghat section is prone to accidents due to its steep slopes and sharp curves.

Periyachuram


Periya is another pass road to Kannur from wayanad via nedumpoil. This is the main road from Wayanad to Kannur Airport.

Chembra Peak


A trekking paradise, Chembra is the highest peak in the Wayanad Hill Range. Chembra Peak is one of best attractions in Wayanad that no one just cannot ignore for its mesmerizing views. This is the place where the clouds graze your cheeks and your eyes are greeted with solace of calm and in the midst of nature. It is also offering an enchanting vista of the heart-shaped lake.
Best Time to visit: The best time to visit is between the months of September and March.

Banasura Hill


This is one of the tallest mountains in the Western Ghats of the Wayanad district. It is one of the highest peak exceeding 2,000 meter after Chembra Peak.Trek to Banasura hill offers green meadows, Meenmutty Waterfalls and the panoramic view of Banasura Sagar Dam.This is a Place rejuvenating retreat to gaze at one of the most unforgettable vistas of your life.

Kattukunnu Mala


“ Kaattu” means wind “Mala” Means Hill
Trekking to kattukunnu hill is a good experience as you can behold the streams and creeks between the rocks. This place is rich in medicinal plants,flowers,fruits etc.

Manikunnu Mala


This is a worship related hill situated at Muttil .A journey to this hill through shrubs and meadows with escort of breeze and mist is a good experience .Another specialty of this hill is,there is a ancient temple on top of this hill and pooja on this temple will be conducted only once in a year.

Brahmagiri Hills


Brahmagiri is a one of most popular trekking hill in Wayanad.It takes more 3 hours of trek to reach on top of the hill,which is situated at 1608 meter above from sea level and it situated on the border of Wayand and Coorge (Karnataka) .Trek is Starting from Forest department camp at thirunelly.

Pakshipathalam


At 1700 meter above from sea level “ Pakshi Pathalam “ is rich in bird diversity. There is cave here which is believed to be used by saints of ancient time.This the finest trekking spot in the country and a perfect place for trekkers one who like to walk through dense forest. Ornithologists consider it is a location that provides a safe environment to some of the rarest avian species.

Lakkidi View Point


Lakkidi the gate way of Wayanad, lies a top Thamarassery ghat pass at an elevation of 700 meter above from sea level. Lakkidi View Point is popular for its nine hairpin road and offers a resplendent view of foothill and can enjoy sunset also.

Kurumbalakotta


This is a monolith hillock located at an elevation of 991 meter above from sea level .Misty mountains and valleys around the hill gives you a pleasant atmosphere and also a magical panoramic view of Wayanad.

Myladippara


Myladippara is a cliff located at Kalpetta, adjacent to the new NH bypass road. Trek to the Myladippara offers a charming experience and on top of hill there is Jain temple .This Is a place offering you 360 view of Kalpetta.

Ponmudikotta


This is a one of the unexplored destination in waynad, Located near edakkal Cave.With its intermittent mist and rains offer a different experience for tourists .This is a another panoramic view point of Waynad.

Kaduvakuzhi


Kaduva means “ Tiger” Kuzhi Means “ Cave”.As the name indicated this place was habitat of tigers years back.On top of Kaduvakuzhi offers a panoramic view of Karapuzha Dam.

Cheengeri Hill


Cheengeri Hill is located very close to Kaduva kuzhi near ambalavayal town. After 30-40 minutes trek through wild grass land and rock terrain to reach the top of the hill. The panoramic view from this hill top is a feast from nature. Viewing the spectacular sunset from here is another attraction.

Nellarachal


This is a ravishing beautiful place on the other side of Karapuzha dam.It is very famous for water lilies on season time.The view of sunset from here through mountains is very beautiful.
